I have two gerbils, this is my second pair of them as I had a pair of females about a year ago which sadly passed away. Anyway I could say I'm pretty experienced with them. This time I have a pair of males named Genghis and Khan (they're Mongolian gerbils) and they are extremely friendly, always coming to greet me and begging for attention. Thing is one of them, Khan has started to bite when I pet them, this is usually around feeding time and I understand he's the dominant one and he's excited but I don't want this to become a habit. The bite isn't powerful or painful but it's harder than usual, they've always nibbled my finger but I have a Siberian dwarf hamster too and she is a bit aggressive and has the bite of a velociraptor. I don't want my gerbils to become like her. I would assume they are becoming less social because they I don't take them out of the cage, they have a lot of energy and two exercise wheels but they should come out and interact once in a while. The reason I don't take them out is because they move like lightning and if they escape, see ya! I've had a gerbil get out and away from me on two separate occasions and let me tell you they hours or even days to catch and put back. Is there a way I can take them out to interact with me? I'm thinking a large cardboard box but with their reflexes I worry about them climbing the sides? Maybe a plastic bin? If playing with them out of the cage doesn't work any suggestions to discourage the intensity and regularity of the biting?
