My 2 yr old gsd has Ehrlichia. For 2 months he has been on 400mg of doxy every day, and 2 times on prelone for 9 days. His blood results are showing no improvement, and they got a bone marrow sample which showed very little production of platelets, red and white blood cells. Now he was prescribed azathioprine to see if this helps kill the parasite. My question is if there is a good posibility this will work (this is a strong medicine like chemo that will weaken him and it really scares me), and if he should be taking any different antibiotics since the doxy has showed no improvement on fighting the parasite. His appetite and energy were good until he started the azathioprine two days ago. Now he does not want to eat and is throwing up. Energy is still ok, and he does take treats. We even considered a bone marrow transplant but these are not available in Panama and my researched showed that this are severe on dogs.. almost like torture. Plus they are extremely expensive.
