Question: What could have caused my cat's aggressive behavior?

Hi everyone! I have a female cat, I assume she's about to turn 1 year, probably 4 months to go (I'm just guessing as she was stray ). She's always been quite tame with us, quite sweet I must say, a complete pain in the butt with the house's furniture but never aggressive with people except for the first 2-3 days in the house. Now she recently went on heat, for the third time if I recall correctly, she's been stalking me for cuddles and probably mating (ugh) just like the other times. This one though I haven't been with her as much (challenges in life, nothing major, I have shown no big stress to her, I'd say I spent 4-5 less hours a day with her, but that's 4-5 less than 24!). When on heat, she generally just climbs me up, rests on my shoulders, meows and headbutts me. As she won't let me pet her head I always find it easier to pet her back, close to the tail/butt (I love her fur! And there's plenty there, I've never touched her private parts or anything that I believed to annoy her). This time though I have been a bit more vigorous with the stroking and in some occasions even too much (I've been doing it like you would to a dog, almost like delicate slaps). She was never really upset about that, she'd meow but quickly rush to me and scratch/bite/headbutt/climb me, so I thought I did nothing that could have hurt her, also because it was never a torture and never for a long time. (plus I'm only now learning that females on heat "suffer", I thought she was just aroused) After she went off heat she would not let me pick her up (that was 2 days ago), and the first day heat-free she became very aggressive, roared at me, hissed at me and even tried to scratch and bite me in a non-playful way (she never really did it all though, that must be love!). I fear I may have upset her with my behavior, but have no way to let her know that I meant to do no harm to her, before going on heat she would ALWAYS stalk me for cuddles, treats and some play time, now she barely want s me, she still sleeps on me but isn't as affective. Is there anything I could do to fix it? Would it take long? I have already been 4 months without her when she got terrified by me after hearing me yell at someone, and I had to work for all those 4 months to rebuild our bound... I'd rather not have her fear or despise me again... Any help? P.S.: call me an idiot for that vigorous petting and not knowing she was in pain, but please, never assume I have been intentionally bad with that cat s me, she still sleeps on me but isn't as affective. Is there anything I could do to fix it? Would it take long?
