My friend has a small female terrier mix that is about 15 years old. The dog's health is failing, and my friend knows it will soon be time to face the question of when to put the dog down. The dog is losing weight week by week. She still eats and seems to have normal bowel movements, but you can see she is losing weight. You can also tell she has pain in some of her legs. While she still moves around fairly well, her steps are somewhat tentative and her whole body shakes a bit when walking. For about six months the dog has had bad smell that has nothing to do with cleanliness. And just recently we've noticed the pupils of her eyes have started to get cloudy. Plus her hearing has deteriorated over the last 6 months. That being said, the dog still seems to have some energy. When there are people around she will come out of her kennel and want to be around people. She'll move from person to person enjoying being petted. She will even lift her front legs up to bring her head to knee level, but she can no longer jump up on to a couch and has difficulty climbing stairs. At times she can even be a little playful. Plus her eye sight is still good enough that she can easily navigate around the house without bumping into objects. So what signs should my friend be looking for to know when it's time to put the dog down.
