why would my guinea pig all of a sudden become skittish?

Basically I live in a dorm and my guinea pig was getting along great, being an adult that I adopted. But recently he became alot more active running around and stuff, and I understand thats a good thing means he's more comfortable but when I place my hand in his cage he will come over smell it and then run in his igloo or wait for me to try to pet him then run in his igloo. So I don't get this Thanks
