Question: Could dogs be sentimentally attach to things that belong to the dead?

We had 2 dogs one male white shepherd and one female German shepherd mix . Recently our male dog was killed by a speeding car that ran a red. Our male dog died and our female was very upset and tried to run away. We decided to find a companion dog for her as soon as we can. We took her to the local animal shelter. The same shelter we got our male dog. We notice there was a white shepherd mixed husky male dog there about the same age as our female dog. We asked for a dog to dog meet up right away. Once the dogs saw each other they clicked. After this meet up we decided to adopt this male dog. Once we took him home. They played in our yard and everything was ok until we decide to lock them in the crates. The female dog went in her crate. The new male dog refuse to go in the crate even when I toss foods inside. My BF forces him in and our female dog barked at him once. The dogs are in the crate and we went out for dinner. Once we came home the new male dog bended the crate and his nose was bleeding. We thought he was afraid of being caged until we tried again and notice every time we push him in the crate the female dog bark at him. I let the female dog out of her crate and she went in the male dog's crate. The male dog walked in to her crate and lay down calmly. Apparently the female dog dislike the new male dog sleeping on the deceased male dog's crate and bed and rather have the new male dog sleep in her crate and bed. Right now they are both sleeping calmly. This new dog was also chosen by our female dog. We were wondering maybe she chose him because he kind of looks like our died dog.
