Question: Foster cat aggression... In serious need of help!?

So I work for a shelter and I am currently fostering a cat that came in. She is about 8-10 months old and I believe she is possibly a Cymric (long haired manx) although we listed DMH on her paperwork. She has only one vertebra for a "tail" and her front legs appear shorter than her back. She is the most affectionate cat I have ever met. All she wants is to sleep on my pillow. Seriously a sweetheart 99% of the time. But then she randomly lashes out and gets aggressive. I have been trying to pick up on any sort of correlation between the attacks and I can t find anything specific triggering them. I have two cats of my own who both get overstimulated and bite and scratch but I can read them and know when to stop. It started last night when we were sitting on the couch. She was sitting on my mom s lap nearly asleep and we were not touching her and she just spazzed and grabbed her hand and started biting hard and growling. Then it happened again this morning. I petted her just once and she started purring. I went to pet her again and she attacked. My cats have never bit with this much force and this foster cat won t let us cut her nails so her scratches HURT. I know absolutely nothing about her past. The people who brought her in said they saw her in their yard and didn t know who she belonged to. It is certainly a shame because minus the biting she is the most perfect cat in the world. I want to know what I can do to help correct this behavior so we can put her up for adoption.
