Question: Adopting a dog this weekend - any tips for a positive homecoming?

My biggest worry will be introducing him to my two cats. Both have lived with dogs before, but no bigger than 20 lbs, where this guy is nearly 70 lbs. The scary part is where his reaction to cats is entirely unknown. I can keep them separate in the basement while I am at work with the dog confined to the main floor. I am the only person in the house, but he will be introduced to family/friends of all ages - any tips for a respectful dog towards visitors? He does jump up on people, and it will be the first habit I intend to break. I am on the fence about crating him. I fully understand the benefits of having a comfortable den for the dog to call his own, but it would otherwise only be used as a tool to keep him under thumb and the cats safe while I am at work. He's shown no destructive habits towards his toys and bedding in the care of the shelter, and is often able to hold his bladder for their 15-hour nights with few accidents. Does a 45 minute walk (before work) with episodes of play and training (after work) sound like adequate exercise for a mastiff/lab mix? (I can't know his actual breed, but this seems the likeliest cross.) His food will be switched over gradually, I plan on being a proper alpha figure, I want for him to be a model citizen, and by god, I just want to do this right! I am terrified and nervous and excited all at once.
