Question: How do companion / service dogs get their exercise?

I was just wondering about the service dogs or companion dogs who have disabled owners. They are there to keep the human company and happy but if that human is disabled, how can they exercise their dogs? Like, large breeds such as Golden Retrievers? I know large dogs need to at least walk 30-40 minutes a day or you have to let them run around freely for some time. I just have this guilty feeling that the dog is indeed making people happy but they deserve better than to just lay all day for the human's sake. At the same time, I do not want them to part with their owners or leave their disabled companions. Which leads to the thought... Is it the disabled human's responsibility to hire some one else to run / exercise their dogs? Is it a must? Or can the dogs really just stay home and quietly stay by the human's side, deprived of exercise and socialization?
