He is 11.5 y/o and a Rotti X that I adopted from the humane society when he was 6 y/o. He has been a great dog but my parent’s dog was Rotti X as well and had to be put down at 11 y/o, so I knew this was coming soon as well. I know this is something you should talk about with your vet but last time I tried to bring it up I feel he tried to side step the question, and he has been to this vet since I have had him. I don’t feel comfortable taking him to a vet who I don’t know and he doesn’t know. You can see his eye’s clouding over, he has benign tumors all over him, he’s very slow to move/get up (won’t walk for more than a block or two), and his mood swings! He has always been afraid of thunderstorms, but instead of hiding under a table like normal, he RIPS the house apart. So, I have started to drug him. He’s never been fond of bath time, but instead of putting the brakes on when he realises it’s time to go to the tub, he turns extremely aggressive. He can be sleeping perfectly one second and the next he is up and barking at me and growling. Those are just a few examples as I could go on and on. The mood swings seemed to happen over night. I understand that this decision is hard, but I am afraid that I am doing it for selfish reasons about it making my life easier. Obviously cleaning up after him is not ideal, I am afraid to leave him alone in the house, and afraid to leave him with a sitter just in case he turned aggressive. My boyfriend (of 3 years) and I decided to move in together after he passes as he is allergic to dogs. I am also concerned that I might be putting him down because I want to move in with my boyfriend! I LOVE my dog! I have had him for nearly 6 years! It makes me sad thinking about this BUT I don’t want to wait TOO long like my parents did and my dog was in pain most of the time. Unless the vet tells me “no,” I think I might put him down. Do you think I am being rushed? When I say "drug" him of course I went to the vet first and he told me the dose of melatonin to give him. After reading what I wrote I realize it sounded wrong...
