Question: To breed or not to breed: what is your experience?

My idea: I m in college to be a nurse, have three years left. I live at home, my college is paid for, so I have plenty of money for my horse still. I wanted to breed my mare next year so by the time I get out of college, the baby would almost be ready for training and I would have the well paying job to really put a lot of GOOD training in that foal. I will definitely be keeping the foal. My reason: My Arabian mare has excellent conformation, excellent health, and such a lovely attitude, and has been excelling in the discipline I do. Friends and even my trainer have mentioned how nice a baby out of her could be (I know sometimes it seems like a coin flip) when crossed with either a Saddlebred (to make a national show horse) or Thoroughbred (to make an Anglo-Arab, which is probably the one I d go for). And while I realize this isn t always a good reason, it would be very special to have a foal out my beloved mare who has been so special to me. Would love to hear other people s opinions. Bad idea? Good? Yes I could go out and find a yearling or green horse, but to be honest Anglo-Arabs are NOT common in this area. In classifieds, the only ones for sale are older (15+) or out of state. For me to ship or import an Anglo-Arab then put training into it... I m looking at $20,000+. Yes breeding, mare care, raising the foal, training the foal is all VERY expensive and may amount to more than $20,000... it isn t all paid at once!
