Question: Was I Wrong to HIT The Rabbit?

My niece got a pet rabbit, Charlies, for her birthday, and I was happy to see the bunny later in the evening when my husband and me came for dinner. For some reason though- Charlie didn't like me. When I tried to pick him up, he growled and squirmed. He also wouldn't eat apple slices from my hand (even though my other friend who has a bunny loves apples). My niece scolded me for being in her room and trying to "scare Charlie". But because I'm her aunt, and technically have authority, I decided to teach her a lesson. After dinner in the living room, I suddenly appeared holding Charlie forcefully in my arms. "Put him down!" Screamed my annoying niece. "I'll show you how to put him down!" I screamed - everyone gasped as I aburptly began spanking Charlie over and over. The bunny squeaked in pain but I wasn't done. I needed lotion to loosen his body up- and spotted some on the coffee table. "Put the lotion in the F*ckng basket!" I yelled at my niece- but her mother was already trying to stop me. "NOOOOO!!!! Please NOOO!!!" My niece was in tears. The bunny now was breathing hard when my husband managed to pry him lose from my hands. Charlie died that night. We got the phone call he apparently died from a heart attack and that his neck was loose. I felt awful. I was only trying to teach my spoiled niece a lesson and spanking a rabbit is no different then spanking a child. But my husband- and family- refuse to speak to me now. Thoughts on why this happened?
