I got a small one gallon hexagon tank for my 4 y.o.'s birthday as her first pet. I've owned large aquariums before (60 gal +) so I do have experience in caring for fish. I filled the tank with rocks, a small live plant, and water. I let it cycle and it's now home to a betta. But I've never used or seen this type of filter pad before. All the pads I've ever used were double sided with carbon in between. This however, is one side pad, the other side with a plastic grate where you can see the carbon through the slats. What side do I face the pad? The filter set up instructions didn't say anything about it and google gave me nothing. Also, in the filter, behind the pad, the water bubbles up a lot causing the water to evaporate rather quickly. Thoughts?
