We had to give away our guinea pigs today due to severe allergies. (I am pretty sure it was just the hay.) I want to get a new pet in a few months, but don't know what would be best suited for our home. We live in an apartment. "No pets allowed" except they are willing to look the other way for things like fish and hamsters. I wasn't really supposed to have guinea pigs. They are "too big." And birds are too loud. I have an 11 year old who wants something she can play with and not worry about being bitten. We are light sleepers, so something that runs on a wheel all night would be a problem. Having to clean the cage more than once a week would also be a problem. (of course, we could clean up if say a water bottle leaked. But we can't do a lot of cleanings on a regular basis.) I think we are too picky, but wanted to see if anybody has suggestions. We might get some fish, frogs, or hermit crabs for the sake of having a pet. But I would rather have something we can enjoy. Preferably with a 1-3 year life span because we would rather have cats or dogs if we get a chance to move somewhere that allows them. House - If we got something friendly and interactive, it would be because we want them to take care of and enjoy them. If we got something that requires "bedding" I do not see is cleaning up on a daily basis. That would get so time consuming and expensive! We did have parakeets a few years ago and scrapped the poop off their perches a few times a day. But real "cleaning" only happened on the weekends, when we would change the paper in the bottom of the cage and pour out any old seeds, etc... I am not sure how else I would put having fish or frogs if not "for the sake of having a pet". I mean, they are nice to look at. And maybe they will follow your finger or take food from your hands. But I have never had an aquatic pet seem to care if I was around or if I just had a neighbor check in and feed them while I was out of town for the day.
