Question: Would like to own a small pet (Similar to to a dog,please read)?

I have own dogs all my life, I love their affection and how they understand basic commands. I now live in a big house but it has carpet and the landlord does not want dogs.. I am considering getting another pet. I am not a big fan of reptiles so snakes and lizards are not an option at the moment. I am afraid of rats.. I think pet rats are smart and all but I cannot get over the fear of house rats. Yet I was considering a robo hamster or guinea pig which kind of looks like a rat, maybe that will take my fear away lol. I've read ferrets are too much to care for as in 6 hours of your day type.. any suggestions?
