Question: So can I use a used filter cartridge that has a colony of beneficial bacteria already set up in it to speed up the cycling process?

So I finally moved my guppies from a five gallon tank to a 10 gallon and I want to buy a betta fish and put it in the old five gallon tank that has a 25 watt heater and a filter and I was wondering if I should just use the old cartridge or is unsanitary and I should just replace it and cycle it for a month or so? Either way no matter what I am going to cycle the tank for at least 2 weeks or until it has no ammonia or nitrites. And yes I have a thermometer,a net,water conditioner,betta flakes and freeze dried bloodworms for an occasional treat. and a ph water tester but my local non-chain petstore tests ammonia.
