Question: Dog is uncontrollable around food?

He is a chocolate lab. I'm 15, so he isn't MY dog, but the family dog that my parents are the owners of. He's 9 years old now, but we've had him since he was a puppy. Ever since we got him, there has never been a peaceful meal in the house. As long as I can remember, mealtimes are just loud, crazy, and not fun at all because my parents are always yelling at him, smacking him, and chasing him out of the kitchen. Holiday dinners are always the worst, because we cook a bunch of food and have it all sitting on the counter, and we usually don't sit at the kitchen table, but in our formal dining room which has a table that's lower to the ground so it's even easier for the dog to try to stick his nose. Our house has a modern open-floor layout, so it's not like we just have doors to these rooms that we can shut to keep the dog out. This dog is just obsessed with food. When he was younger, he actually sometimes stood up on counters and stole food, but now that he's old and his legs hurt him, he doesn't do it anymore. But he still always comes up to the table when we sit down to eat. My dad especially gets so annoyed and angry because he just has this pet peeve about dogs being around the table while people are eating. So meals ALWAYS start with my dad yelling and battling with the dog to get him to lie down away from the table. He is so obsessed and focused on getting the food, so he rarely responds to my dad yelling at him or smacking him on the snout. So then my dad will just get up and physically remove the dog from the table and force him to lie down. Then he just lays there and watches us intently, just waiting for any little crumb to get dropped. We don’t intentionally feed him from the table. But if someone accidentally drops something, or whenever someone get up from the table to go get seconds, the dog immediately pounces up and either runs to the table to eat the food that got dropped, or tries to follow the person who got up to go to the kitchen and get more food. Then the whole cycle starts again. It’s gotten to the point that I’m too embarrassed to have any friends over for dinner. My mom actually told me to invite my boyfriend over for Christmas dinner this year, but I just made up an excuse for why he couldn’t come, and I never even invited him. Which I feel bad about, but I really am embarrassed for anyone to come over and see what our mealtimes are like. Because of the way the dog behaves, and because of how angry my dad gets. I’ve never seen my friends’ parents hit their dogs, and their dogs don’t behave like this either. How can we actually stop all of this craziness? This has been going on for 9 years and it’s just ridiculous. My parents won’t put him in his crate while we eat, because he’ll just bark and whine and that annoys them. How can I/they actually get control over the dog and train him to just stay away??
