Question: Animal cruelty/custody question, can anyone give any advice?

Hi I ha spilled up a male cat from a store and everyone said to take him home even the owner of the the cat. The cat had been shot, hadn't been feed, and wasn't fixed. So I took him home with me that night I noticed he wal bleeding when he went to the restroom so I took hi. To the vet and they told me he was going to die if I disnt treat the wound and his uti now it's been a full day since the vets and the previous owner wants him back and is cussing at me saying I stoll his cat what should I do because he is threatening me and just so happens to know where I live and I don't want to give him back I spent all this money on him and I love him why would I give him back to a abusive owner
