My yard isn't fenced (and the ground is frozen so it's too hard to put one in right now) so my dog has a tie out. During the summer a tie out worked fine for him but he's snapped 2 of them in the last week. He's a 1 year old border collie mix and actually not that big (considered medium size, he's about 35lbs) but he's strong. I replaced the first snapped one which was a 30ft for a medium sized dog for a 30ft for a large dog and he snapped that too. I'm on the 3rd one this week but I think the cabling inside the tie out isn't strong enough which is why they're snapping. I initially had his tie out in the backyard but with the winter/snow I moved it to the side of the house and he's starting to notice cars :-(. I'm having a fence put up for him when the ground isn't frozen (mid spring, we're in Michigan) but I need something to contain him in the meantime. The first time it snapped I got luck that my neighbor was walking her dog and saw it so she brought him back. Second one, I was outside. With the cold right now (-8 is the actual temp today) he's not outside for more than a few minutes, but a few minutes is all it takes to get lost or hit by a car.
