I set up a 2.7 gallon tank about a month ago. I set up the tank as directed, cleaning everything, correcting the water temperature, etc. I purchased 2 guppies and a small, "Nerite" snail. Once setting up the tank, they all were fine for a few days. Then the mystery snail stopped moving. I picked it up and moved it to the front of the tank where I could keep an eye on it, and it ended up laying sideways, with the bottom of the shell mostly facing up. I watched it for the next few days and it did not move. After 5 days of it laying on its back, I took it back to the store assuming it was dead. I had put algae tablets in the tank a few times, before and after it stopped moving, so I don't think it was starving. When I took the snail back they said it was not dead because it didn't have the "dead snail" smell. I got another snail, I believe a larger mystery snail. It was very active for the first two or three days, then he started floating to the top. I looked up why snails float and thought it probably had an air bubble. I took it out, turned it over to get the bubble out. When I did this, I heard a few small, popping sounds, but when I put it back in it continued to float. I also read that snails may protest if they don't like the water. When I got the second snail, I had also purchased a 7.5 W heater to make sure the tank was staying the appropriate temperature, so I don't believe there was a big fluctuation in temperature. I added more water (which raised the water level by about 2 inches, around a full Solo cup) with three drops of Aquasafe Water Conditioner, which says "Neutralizes chlorine, chlorine, and heavy metals; Enhances natural protective slime coating of fish." After another day the snail sank and did not move. Because the pet store had told me the last one wasn't dead, I waited a little longer in order to make sure it was REALLY dead. I never smelled the "dead snail" smell, which was supposed to be evident within 12 hours. Today, two weeks after getting the second snail, I moved it and it was disintegrated. I know it is dead because I can see the inside of the shell. The two guppies I have are fine, swimming around normally. I have two males, but they are not aggressive. They don't fight with each other, and I've never seen them even touch the snails. Even when the second snail was disintegrated and had algae on it, the guppies didn't bother it. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I would really like to have a snail around. Is there something wrong with my tank? Would I have a better time with a different bottom feeder? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
