Do cherry barbs need a female:male ratio?

I'm looking to get a small school of Cherry Barbs for the new tank I am setting up. I want them because of their color, mostly. They have to stand out because the tank I am getting is for my new office, and I want people who are waiting to be able to see the fish easily. The tank is a 20 gallon with a filter and heater. I know that male Cherry Barbs are the very red ones, but I am wondering if they need a male to female ratio. Would three males be okay together? Or do I need to do 1 male & 2 females? The other important factor is that I will have a male pearl Gourami in the tank. He is my main fish so he is what I am trying to build around. As you may know, Gouramis can be picky. ;They can be territorial, but I've also read that Pearls are a more communal Gourami. I have one currently in my other tank. She's a female and houses fine with Swordtails, Blind Caves, White Clouds, and several other random live-bearers. With all that info out of the way, here's my main questions: Can Cherry Barbs house with my Pearl without problems, and if so, can I get three males? Or would I have to get 1 male and 2 females? Or would they not go well with my Pearl? I am aware that barbs can be semi-aggressive, but I've also heard that Cherry Barbs are a more communal barb, which is why I'm kind of confused at this point. If these would not be a good choice, what are some suggestions of what would work? Remember that they have to be very noticeable from across the room, and note that I don't like most tetras. Thanks :)
