Question: 30 gallon semi aggresive freshwater fish tank?

I'm thinking about having an aquascape with plenty of plants but I want semi-aggresive fish. I've heard of 30 gallon cichlid tanks and jack Dempsey cichlids but I'm not sure if they are actually supposed to be in a 30 gallon tank. I want action top middle and bottom colorful fish but fish that won't kill eachother. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe a kuhli or yoyo loach and a pleco possibly but I don't know what to get for the top. I also have a 55 gallon tank to move fish tht get to big.
