What causes continual dry heaves in a 14 yr old dog.?

I have a 14 year old chow, lab mix. She is in good health, other than for the past 2 weeks or so she continually acts like she is throwing up, but has the dry heaves. This goes on constantly. I think she feels a little better when she is standing up, but not sure at this point. She nor I sleep with her continual illness. I plan on taking her to the vet, but any idea what is going on, what causes this or what I can do for temporary relief (pepto maybe)
