Question: My cat doesn't bathe herself?

I have a cat, Sophie, whos 6 years old. Shes a long-haired shelter cat so we don't know exactly what she is. She pretty fat and has been for awhile. She almost never cleans herself and it really shows because she smells and her butt has poop dingleberries, nasty i know. I've seen many articles that say once you give a cat a bath it resets it schedule and cleans itself once more. We've given her 2 or 3 baths before and she hates them and it does nothing for her. I'm worried that her being overweight made her less flexible and she can't reach?? But I know there are fat cats who are perfectly clean so thats where I'm confused. I also think it could a problem with her poop being too runny so it sticks to her long fur?? Ok wow so nasty I'm aware but its a problem. Her fur is also very matted lately especially around her face and on her back near her tail. I'm trying to convince my parents to take her to the vet, do you think thats the right option or is there some magical way to get my kitty on track again without trying to bathe her? If bathing is the only option I think getting it done professionally would be more effective, but is there a price range on that, I can't seem to find any. Sorry this question was all over the place but i just want my cat to be able to sit in my lap again without her stinking up the place. Thanks so much sorry for grossing you out-
