My mother has wanted a new dog for about 10 years now, but her situation hasn't let her have the time to get one and put in the right amount of time for house breaking, social work and obedience training. She has always loved the Doberman and I was thinking about getting her one for her birthday, Valentine's day. I only consider this because she is now ready for a new pup. I know the Doberman can be classed as a dominate breed and some owners I've talked to say she should maybe look for another breed. However most friends of mine or owners I see at the dog parks say that it's a good breed and fit for my mother(knowing my mother). We've made friends with a few high regarded breeders and spent a lot of time with their pups and adults. Here is a little facts for you guys so you can determine if the breed is a right fit for my mother: #She is 52 years old, but very active. She runs/brisk walks and visits parks DAILY. # She lives alone, but has many friends over # She has had five dogs Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Collie, German Shepherd and Husky # She currently has a six year old cat who is friendly to other animals # She lives in her own home, not an apartment, with a large backyard (fenced: 6ft) # She runs her business from home, but goes on trips with friends (national) ( maybe 6 a year) # She's always moving, gardening, walks/runs, bird watching, etc. # She values pets as members of the family (getting Bday/Christmas gifts for all pets in family) # Lives in Ohio (no problem for her to put a sweater on the dog in winter) To my understanding the Doberman can be a "velcro" dog. Meaning they love to be side-by-side with their owner all the time. I thought it would be a good match since she wants a companion and always on the move. The Doberman can keep up with her and also offer protection (kinda worry when she's doing her walks at dusk). So, what do ya'll think? Should I do it? Thanks.
