Dogs best alone or with 'siblings'?

I was reading an article today about how dogs do or don't need other dogs. She wrote about how her current dog did well on short 'play dates' with other dogs but how she thought she'd be better off as an only child. The woman who wrote it published it a few years ago, more recent articles indicate that she did indeed choose to eventually get a second dog and she goes on to discuss her two dogs interactions with the new comers damadged past and what that meant for their interactions. I personally always knew I wanted to have more than one dog, I grew up always having a house full of dogs and on the rare occassion we were down to one there was a noticible depression in the lone dog. I adopted my female and a little over 6 months later brought home a brother for her, however I put in a great deal of research and effort looking for the perfect sibling for her. A year later and her anxiety is all but gone, she's toned down her excitability and my male has come out of his shell through his sisters guidance (and training, lots and lots of training!). I feel they ended up being vital in each others emotional growth and development, and that they would have struggled far more had they been alone. I am personally a big fan of having a pack and the importance of this for the dogs emotional and mental health. Though of course every dog is an individual, and I certainly wouldn't recomend forcing a second dog into an aggressive dogs home. What is your opinion on living in a multiple dog home and what that can or can't provide for a dog? How has it helped or hindered you? (btw here's the article http://ift.tt/1ii6PWd )
