how can I gain trust from a rabbit that was abused?

I took in a one year old male rabbit because the previous owner did not have time to keep a rabbit. So the rabbit was locked in a cage and not given any attention, but that's not the worse part. The owner would hit the rabbit, and i know that's not a good thing considering rabbits are prey animals, so the rabbit is aggressive and scratches me nearly every time I go to feed him. There are some times when he allows me to scratch him behind the ears and he'll nuzzle. He is a genuinely sweet rabbit, but has horrible trust issues. So how can I let him know I'm not here to hurt him?
