Running with a dog - question time?

I have started running with my dog. He's a border collie and loves it. I love it too because he does like brisk walks, and it means he doesn't pull - he is happy, my arms are happy. But I wanted to know something. Are walks likely to help dogs who have a tendency to lunge at cars? I've planned a new route for us which mainly avoids cars, but to get to the park we need to cross a road which is a route into town and also a bus route. Quite busy. I would like to run to the road and nip across without him pulling me into said road. Next part is how long should I take him for a run for? It's about three minutes from our house to the park, and it takes at least an hour to get around all of the paths in the park. He's not used to running, so do you suggest we run to the park, do fifteen minutes with short breaks for him to sniff around and then have a half hour slow walk before jogging back? He's three years old, is used to running because he loves chasing balls and going crazy in the garden, and I take him for short bursts during our current walks. Never for a long time though at the moment.
