how does Advantage ll work on cats?

i've heard a lot of really good things about it and that it works really really well so i got it to put on my 'teenage' cat because she got fleas and when i put it on its just kind of a greasy spot on the back of her head? so how would it kill fleas that would be on her belly or on her back? i'm just wondering how it could kill all the fleas like everyone says it does if its just staying on her neck/back of her head...
