If my female cat is not in her "period of heat", will she prevent my male cat to mate with her?

I have two cats at home, one male and one female. They are around 5-6 months old. The male has started trying to mate with the female two days ago and I called a veterinary clinic to get an appointment to get the male neutered yesterday. Until then, I was wondering, if the female cat is not in her heat period, will she make sure to repel the male completely? Or might she let him do the job anyway? PS: I know I should have neutered one or both of them earlier, but I only recently decided that I don't want more baby cats and expected the male to try breeding for the first time later.
