I will try to keep this as short as possible while giving enough info. I have a male Dachshund who is about 7 years old. About 4 days ago I noticed he was acting differently. He wasn't moving around much and he just sat in one spot. I didn't think anything of it at first. Then a few days ago I touched his back and thigh and he yelped and jumped. I've heard him yelp about 4 times. Then on Monday I noticed his right leg looked different than his left, and shortly after he started standing with his leg behind him kind of like when a dog does a stretch. I took him to the vet yesterday morning (Monday) technically 2 days ago. While there the Vet did a test to check his neck, back, neurological, and reflexes. All were good. Then I paid for x rays to check his back and legs. He showed me the Xrays and I told him it looked like the right leg looked different on the xray. he didn't really say anything he just kinda ignored it and went on. I figured ok I will trust his knowledge. They gave him pain meds for him to take orally and they gave him a pain shot which will last about 3 days. Now here's where the problem arises he told me that my dog more than likely jumped off something and irritated a muscle or tendon in his back. He said there was no structural damage in his leg or back. He said the back irritation could be causing the leg awkwardness ( like a herniated disc in a human can cause leg pain) is how he explained it. Now today my dog is walking with an even worse limp. The thing is he gets around fine and I took him for a 10 minute walk. About twice it looked like his right leg gave out a bit but he recovered it quickly. He stand and his leg looks bent and contorted when he squats. He has poops or stands his right leg looks very bent and like it's too flexible. I've never seen him do that before. My question: Should I listen to the vet and see if he gets better with rest? Maybe it goes away in a few days, if so, great. Or should I take the disc that has the xrays and go to a different vet for a second opinion. he said call me back if you notice anything weird or it doesn't get better.
