I have had rabbits for many years but tonight until Tuesday night, temps are supposed to be the coldest weather in forty years. Two nights ago, one of my rabbits had hypothermia and gi stasis so we brought him inside. Usually the rabbits are in cages in a draft free shed with boxes filled with timothy hay. However, tonight, one of my other bunnies was shivering. We put up 250 watt heating lamps approximately between 1-2 feet from the bunny with the exception of the rabbit with the clip on lamp. Everyone seems to be more comfortable now and is eating more food and just seems more alive. Is it okay to leave these on? All the websites say not to use them but they seem way too cold/uncomfortable otherwise. The shivering bunny wouldn't eat or drink until I put the lamp up. Now he is eating and drinking and sleeping by the warmest part of his cage. If they were hot I would think they would not be under the lamps, but everyone is the closest they can get to the lamps. I just fear they will overheat but they love the warmth. I will only keep them on until the -35 to -55 weather passes. I gave them all fresh water at least four times today. They have never appeared this cold before in the subzero temps but two of my rabbits are small and there are two small ones that live in the same cage and one larger rabbit that was acting lethargic yesterday. Everyone seems to be more lively. So my short question to this long explanation is this: is it ok to use heat lamps until this cold snap breaks? Ive never had my bunnies get this cold. Oh also,everyone is between the ages of 2-6. The large rabbit is about six and all the small ones are about 2-3. The rabbit we ended up bringing in the house is between 4-6 (not exactly sure how old he was when we got him). My guess is that the cold is worse on them when they get older. Thanks everyone!
