Senior cat howls before his has to poo often spotted in the bathtub?

Basically my 19 year old cat has a few bowel issues, he poops like five times a day, which is why he doesn't have a littler box at all times, too much maintenance and expensive. He's generally an outdoor cat. In the winter months he really won't go outside unless its decent enough for him to walk somewhere to do his business. When we don't have a littler box out for him and he won't go outside, he goes into the bathtub, I think he knows that's where humans do their business and thinks the tub is like a giant cat toilet. Anyway, before he poops he always lets out this god awful howling, not sure if he is trying to let us know he is about to go or if he's depressed or something cause he can't go out and be all territorial and stuff and bury his poo, but we often hear this howling and catch him squatting in the bathtub. Is this in any way normal?
