I'm a first time pet owner, and my 10 week old Collie Terrier mix is my first. I got her on Friday and so we've been through three nights together. The whining was so so so bad the first night, and it got just a tiny bit less but still happens. Basically she just barks and whines but I try to ignore her. I play with her vigorously before bed to tire her out but it almost feels like she's nocturnal. I also put the crate in the living room and moved my furniture around so I could lay out a blanket and sleep next to her. So me and my mom sleep down there right with her. I tried to leave her alone because I start school tomorrow and she needs to get used to not being around me all day but she whined when I left her. Also, she poops at 3am. She is newspaper trained. We put newspapers next to her crate and I take her out. But I live in Michigan and it is negative five degrees out with an even worse windchill - she literally shivers and hiccups and cries when I take her out so my dad said its too cold for her to go out for a couple days. Anyway, my dad is kind of upset at the whining and i don't want her to give up on her. I want to keep her and I want everyone in the family to love her. Yes she's annoying but she is a PUPPY. She needs the care, and I'm willing to give it to her. But are there any tips for my situation? Everyone goes back to work/school tomorrow, so the only one home with her will be my grandma. She's never been around dogs in her life, but I'm teaching her how to put her in her crate and how to play with her, she's doing fine. But there's still that anxiety, you know? My main q's: 1) How to stop separation anxiety/whining (ESPECIALLY at night but even otherwise) *I sleep with her so I dont know why she whines, but if I go to the bathroom during the day, she'll whine outside the door until I come out. That's bad because I go to class for 12 hours a day on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (I have the rest of the week off.) 2) How to get her on a schedule so she doesn't poop at 3am 3) In the middle of the night, I'll wake up to her eating away at her bedding. Will it cause major issues if she eats it and swallows some of it? I'm so nervous so I stop her. 4) SOMETIMES not always, she licks her privates, is that a sign of anything bad? 5) ANY TIPS you have for puppy training of ANY SORT are greatly appreciated. I am SO new at this but I am willing to do WHATEVER it takes to keep her a healthy, happy, and smart puppy. Thanks! Oh you should know I took her for her regular vet check within 15 hours of getting her and everything seemed to be okay with her physically. They took a stool sample and I should get the results today but nothing seemed urgently pressing. Oh btw, she hasn't peed in like 12 hours, but she pooped three times already today. Usually she pees five times a day and poops twice. Is this ok? I don't know if she peed on her bedding at night or not, I can't tell, but if she hasn't, it'll have been 12 hours.
