Is it safe to neuter guinea pigs?

I was doing research about various different pets online and came across one source that said you should spay/ neuter guinea pigs and they live longer, healthier lives as such. The idea of this has crossed my mind because eventually (once I become more expert on guinea pig owning/ raising and have the money) I would very much like to have a guinea pig herd with both male and female guinea pigs. However, the last time I heard about spaying/ neutering rodents, it was mentioned as a risky procedure that is best avoided. But that was about gerbils who are much smaller than guinea pigs. Growing up I had two male rabbits and one of them was neutered and I suppose a rabbit may make a better comparison to a guinea pig (even though rabbits aren't rodents). I only have two male guinea pigs right now and have no intentions of bringing home any more for a while, so there's no need to neuter them. I'm just curious and I suppose would like to know perhaps for future reference .
