I want to switch the brand of food I'm giving to my cat?

I want to stop feeding her Meow Mix because I can see it's not doing her any good. She's not very active, even for an 8-year-old cat. I'm afraid that she's approaching obesity because every time I go to pick her up, she's heavier than the last time. I'm not sure what to feed her, but I would prefer it to be something I can buy at a nearby store - a well-enough-known brand. Also, I have tried to give her different things in the past and she can never keep it down. I'm thinking that I should try mixing the new food in with her old stuff. Would that be a good idea? Has anyone been in a similar situation? If so, what did you do/how did you go about it? Thanks xx
