Suggestions would be really helpful!?

I have a senior dog, he's 13 years old. He's pretty much been the only dog of the house all his life. I've heard that sometimes when you get an older dog a puppy, it cheers them up & makes them young again. My biggest fear is that he'll think he's being replaced or that the pup is the center of attention. We had gotten another boy pup about two years ago & my dog got really jealous & sick..we paid attention to both of them but idk if he didn't like the fact that the other one was a boy or that there was a new dog in general. Ofcourse I'm going to pay more attention to my senior dog, he is my baby! & if I were to get another dog I'm planning on getting a girl, that way he doesn't feel like there's competition. Another thing is, I know it's going to destroy me when my dog passes, & I feel like having another dog will NOT make it easy or distract me, but I feel like she will know what I'm going through & comfort me. I love my dog so much though so idk what to do :(
